An offline book formatting app is not nostalgia — it is risk management. Manuscripts deserve tools that work on planes, in cabins, and when the cloud has a bad day.

Problems with always-online formatters
- Outages block editing at the worst time (launch week)
- Latency on large images and long books
- Privacy concerns when drafts sync by default
- Vendor lock-in if export is gated
What offline-first should mean
Local project files, full editing without login ping every minute, optional cloud — not mandatory cloud. Manusly stores work on your machine; cloud sync is an upgrade path, not a gate for writing.
Backup still matters: Offline is not a substitute for versioned backups. Export project archives regularly.
Privacy angle
Unfinished memoirs and unreleased series drafts are sensitive. Keeping the active manuscript local reduces unnecessary copies on third-party servers.
